Flipbooks have been around for some time now. They are little books that show a set of sequenced movements when you flip the pages, making them look like motions from a movie. They work by holding the edge of the book in your left hand and using your right hand to quickly flip the pages. Fliptomania is a company that creates some of the most unusual and sophisticated flipbooks ever made.
My kids received three flipbooks from Fliptomania. The Best in Show flipbook shows a series of dog faces while the Metamorphosis! flipbook shows the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly. The Degas Dancer flipbook has Degas' famous statue leap her way onto the stage and into a painting. The flipbooks are small in size and would make exceptional stocking stuffers for the holidays. They're fun to look at and see the movements come to life from the pages. The illustrations make them seem even more real.
Fliptomania also has kits so you can create your own flipbooks. My son, Adam, created his own flipbooks with the Rocket and Robot Flipbook Kit. Included in the kit are two blank flipbooks and two rocket, robot flipbooks. There are also five markers and four clips. The rockets and robots flipbooks already have images on them that just need to be colored in. The blank flipbooks are for the child to color any way they want.
For one of the blank flipbooks, Adam created a race car scene and for the other he created a dog running. After he made his own scenes, he separated the flipbook pages alone the perforated lines of the sheets, then stacked the pages in numerical order. Once he had all right side edges of the pages stacked even, he placed a clip on the left side of the flipbook. The end result was flipbooks that he created on his own.
Adam needed very little assistance from me in creating his flipbooks and says he had fun making his own. Granted, they aren't bound like actual books but they are fun to create and watch the scenes come to life that your child has created themselves.
