Discovery Girls - Magazine Review and Giveaway
I have subscriptions to a few magazines that interest me. Some, I pass on to my girls to read when I'm done. Others get passed to co-workers or friends, without my girls getting a glance at them. That's because I'm pretty sure they're too young yet to know about how to romantically seduce a guy or find passion in bed. I'm an adult with an open mind, but the content in some of the magazines I read can be a bit racy even for me.
Discovery Girls is a magazine for tween girls that I find to be appropriate for my daughters to read. It is filled with advice, quizzes, and helpful tips. I hadn't heard of Discovery Girls until April of this year when I first did a review for the company, but apparently it's been in circulation for ten years. It was created by girls, for girls ages 8 to 12.
I received a few sample issues of Discovery Girls for review in April and now my two tweens look forward to receiving issues of this magazine. I found is that it has a lot of meaningful articles that apply to tween girls. For instance, peer pressure and learning to be generous are a couple of things talked about. There are fun quizzes and reviews. I came away feeling like this magazine is about helping tween girls with confidence, betterment, and growing independence. Tween girls tell their stories and give advice or answers to questions, making it relatable. There's a lot of reading material in each issue and they're not all about how to make your boy crush like you. Unlike a lot of magazines, Discovery Girls isn't littered with ads. There's a few here and there, but I don't feel like I'm being bombarded with them. I feel very comfortable with my daughters reading this magazine.
Of course, the opinions that really matter on this magazine are those of my two tween girls. Emma and Juliann both liked all the fun things that are to do in each issue but they also liked that the magazine has stories about girls their ages. Juliann's favorite is the 'Embarassing Moments' section in each issue. Since reading the magazine, both of my tweens have visited the Discovery Girls website on several occasion to enter giveaways, take quizzes, and read more advice. The U.S. subscription price to Discovery Girls is $19.95 a year for six issues.
Discovery Girls is celebrating ten years and has put together a special, super-sized Collector's Edition. It has the best of the features from the past ten years, plus more behind-the-scenes content and twelve role models. It is jam-packed with ten years of the best fun quizzes, embarrassing moments, helpful advice, and sticky situations. In the advice and tips sections, it gives the year of when it came out and each section is categorized so you can automatically fip to the fashion, features, quizzes, role model, and embarrassing moments sections. The Collector's Edition hits newsstands July 8th.
Win It!
One person will win a 1-year subscription to Discovery Girls magazine, one set of the 4-book Fab Girls Guides, and the special 10-year Collector's Edition.

I learned from the FAQ that Discovery Girls is girls who are curious, strong, and enthusiastic about becoming the very best they can be and that every other month they stop at a state and do a two day photo shoot and 12 Discovery Girls are chosen to represent their state. I have never heard about Discovery Girls Magazine until reading your review today and It sounds like the type of magazine I would like my tween daughter reading. I too do not allow my tweens to read a lot of the magazines out there because I think they are way to racy. Thanks for Sharing this with all your readers Terra it's good to know there is a magazine safe for them to read.

-Something I learned: They consider all of their readers “Discovery Girls” — girls who are curious, strong, and enthusiastic about becoming the very best they can be. In each issue of Discovery Girls, they also feature 12 “Discovery Girls” we’ve chosen to represent their state in the magazine. Every other month, they visit a different state for a two-day photo shoot, during which their 12 Discovery Girls from that state help them put together the issue.
