A while back I mentioned that I was chosen to be a Kaplan Tutoring Test Drive Mom. After weeks of working with Kaplan Tutoring, I'd like to report my personal experience.
I'd like to say that many things were learned and I was able to see advancement in my boys' skills, but that wasn't something we were able to progress on. From the get-go, Adam and Logan were excited to participate and started on the assessments of the Smart Track system. Unfortunately, that's as far as they got.
The online assessments were very thorough and had numerous questions to help assess what level the boys were at and what they needed work on. Several times Logan and Adam took the assessments and could never proceed to the actual lessons. I logged on to the parent account where I could see what they had accomplished thus far.
The parent account was a handy tool to find out how advanced Logan and Adam were in their reading and math skills. The math and reading areas were broke down in sub-categories, giving an even further interpretation. It indicated that Logan never completed his assessments, but Adam had.
Where the problem lied is that I know Logan completed his assessments. I was there with him when he tried to do it a couple of times. After getting an email response from Kaplan about the situation, I learned that the assessments were too high to begin with and they adjusted them accordingly; therefore, making it necessary for Logan and Adam to again do more assessments. That is very understandable and I'm appreciative that they were adjusted; however, it would have been nice to know that off the bat rather than wondering what in the world we were doing wrong.
We did find out that there's a Reward Zone where children can earn points for different tasks that earns them rewards. The boys have racked up quite a few points.
Although Logan and Adam have gotten no further than the assessments, they are still interested in going further with Kaplan's Smart Track program. They really do want to learn and are willing to give it a second chance. I am going to set them up with a free one month trial of Kaplan Tutoring to get back in the game. If you'd like to see what Kaplan Tutoring is all about, you can try it free for one month by going to http://bit.ly/1mFREE and selecting "Buy Program Now". Then enter discount code FB1MO at the account setup page to get one month of the online program, a $29 value, for free.
I wrote this review while participating in a Test Drive Program by Mom Central on behalf of Kaplan and received the products necessary to facilitate my review. In addition, I received a gift certificate to thank me for taking the time to participate. The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.
