When it was summertime and we were camping, my kids would go to the campground office every weekend to purchase ice cream, slushies, and snow cones. They looked forward to it every weekend. I can't begin to name the many reasons we look forward to camping again, but that is one of them.
Thankfully, there's a product on the market that gives kids the frozen treats that they want all year long. With the Blizzie, created by Alf Bucierri, kids can make their own slushy drinks.
My son, Adam, was the first to try the Blizzie and all the other five kids thereafter have taken turns using it. The whole process is fairly simple and the outcome is quite cool.
There are three freezer cubes made of a concentrated salt water solution that need to be frozen until solid. Once they are frozen, the three cubes are dropped into the shaker and a drink is poured in to the fill line. The lid is then put on the shaker. Once that is done, a finger is placed over the pinhole on top of the lid and then it is necessary to shake it 2-3 times. After shaking and venting it by lifting your finger off the pinhole a few times, you can enjoy a deliciuos slushy drink.
I was pretty impressed with how easy it was to make a slushy. We've used sodas and juices to make different tastes and flavors. After doing the process once, it was easy to do over and over again. We found out through experimentation (and the help of the directions) that it's best for the drinks to be cold so the slushy gets to a good consistency. We also found that it's best to let the slushy sit for a couple of minutes before drinking so it can mix well and get a more desired result.
Included with the freezer cubes and the shaker is a spoon/straw utensil. I prefer to drink it out of the straw end myself. I'm not quite sure how doing just a few small steps creates a delicious slushy, but I am quite sure that we enjoy making them and tasting them.
