The Secret of Kells - DVD Review and Giveaway

DVD Synopsis:
In a remote medieval outpost of Ireland, young Brendan embarks on a new life of adventure when a celebrated master illuminator arrives from foreign lands carrying a book brimming with secret wisdom and powers. To help complete the magical book, Brendan has to overcome his deepest fears on a dangerous quest that takes him into the enchanted forest where mythical creatures hide. It is here that he meets the fairy Aisling, a mysterious young wolf-girl, who helps him along the way. But with the barbarians closing in, will Brendan's determination and artistic vision illuminate the darkness against evil?

The Secret of Kells, released on DVD and Blu-ray October 5th, is hailed by critics and audiences alike as one of the most beautiful animated films of all time.


My Review:

Those familiar with Irish history know about the Book of Kells, a real book of Gospels done by Celtic monks. This movie is loosely based upon it. Although the animation in this movie is simple (it reminds me of how older cartoons were created), the storyline is one that my kids enjoyed.

With a running time of just a little over an hour, The Secret of Kells is unconventional yet entertaining. I think a little longer running time would have been helpful to explain some things regarding Brendan, but the main plot was not lost. There are a handful of darker scenes that may frighten smaller children. This magical and enchanting movie, with a plot unlike what's usually seen in animation, make this a recommended DVD.
