Gooseberry Patch - Review & Giveaway

Anybody who knows me can tell you that I rarely cook. It's usually my husband that makes the meals. When I get in the mood to cook or bake, it has to be something simple with ingredients that I can easily purchase. Even when it is my husband doing the cooking, I do the shopping and am always on the lookout for new recipes that will feed our large family at a decent price.

Gooseberry Patch has been publishing country cookbooks since 1992. There are over 160 cookbooks to choose from, as well as organizers to keep things in place.



The Dinners on a Dime cookbook is one that I had the opportunity to review. It has more than 200 recipes for delicious, budget-friendly family meals. The cookbook itself is hardcover and comb-bound so that it does not easily fall apart. It can be laid flat for easy viewing. The recipes were submitted by ordinary people, with a short paragraph as to why they submitted the recipe. Recipes are divided into sections such as Slow-Cooker Savings, Budget-Friendly Gatherings, Shoestring Suppers, and more.

We've cooked up a few of the recipes already, with plans to make more. A couple that we really like are the Prairie Bacon-Corn Chowder and the Baked Turkey Wings. The recipes do not require high-dollar ingredients and I've found that it does not cost much as a whole to feed the whole family.

This cookbook is loaded not only with recipes, but also with tips and tricks. I learned that toasted oats can take the place of chopped nuts in cakes and cookies. I also learned how to easily turn canned fruit into cool fruit sorbet.

I'm not a cookbook collector, but I'm sure this is one I will keep and refer to often. There are loads of meals that I can't wait to still try.
