Gamewright - Review & Giveaway

I'm up for anything that brings my family together to have fun and learn. Sitting at the table laughing and spending quality time together are memories I hope to instill in my children. Board games are a perfect opportunity to do just that.

Whether you want to play and learn with your kids or play and let loose with adults, you can find a wide range of games for people of all ages at Gamewright. Gamewright was founded in 1994 by four parents whose kids wanted great games. They offer over 50 games that have received over 150 awards. Nine new games are to be launched in 2010. One very helpful feature they include on the site is rules for all of the games they offer. This is good for when you don't have the rules with you or may have misplaced them.

One fun game that Gamewright sells is In a Pickle. Me and the kids have played this one a few times. This game is an outstanding learning experience while having fun at the same time. It includes 320 cards featuring nouns and players must win rows of cards by playing the largest "noun" in the string of cards. You try to win a set of cards by fitting smaller things into bigger things. For example, the word baby is on the table and you have the word bathtub in your hand. You could play on it because a baby goes in a bathtub. The next person who has the word house could lay down because a bathtub is in a house. And so on and so forth. The player with the most sets at the end is the winner. During game play, you are able to challenge what a person plays and make them explain why they think one word would fit into a word that is already laid down.

When I played with the kids, there were a lot of challenges. It was funny to hear some of the explanations as to why one noun would coincide with another. We giggled as we explained away and, although I'd never tell the kids, they learned a lot about nouns and how things correlate while playing. It's like learning lessons but not minding because it's so much fun.

Another game we've played is Funny Business. The basis of the game is to come up with clever names for a business with the two different cards you select. For instance, if you have the word bakery on one card and the word barber shop on another, one name you might come up with is Bread Heads. The cards have lots of suggestions to help in coming up with clever names for your "business". All players vote for the name they like best and the one with the most votes wins.

This game is less about strategy and more about creativity. You want to come up with a name that would make people vote for you. My kids put on their thinking caps and came up with all sorts of wild and wacky names. There was some bickering as one of the kids would think it wasn't fair that their business name wasn't picked. I had to remind them a couple of times that it was all in fun and that nobody knew who wrote down which "business" name. It's done in secret so there's no disadvantage.

Both games that we've played, Funny Business and In a Pickle, have been fun and educational.

Win It!
One person will win a Funny Business game.
